When you’re hot, you’re hot! This past week has to be one of the best I’ve ever had on the water. It all started when I tried to video a bedding bass and couldn’t get the shots I wanted because of the overcast. Since I couldn’t film what I wanted, I decided to see if they would hit a Hollow Body Frog. That was the start of a something really special.
The first trip out was great, with a couple of 6+ pound fish and lots of bites, but it was also the only day I could fish for the next 5 days. So I had to just hope that the bite would keep going. I shouldn’t have worried. When I got back on the water on Sunday, March 30th; not only were they still biting, the really big fish had moved up shallow.
That trip was one of those days that you dream about, but that are so rare in fishing. I caught a couple and was about half way around the lake, when I had a massive strike on a frog. I had pressure on the fish and it was pulling drag. My first thought was “here’s the fish I’ve been hoping for”, but about the time the words entered my thoughts, I felt the fish pull off.
After a few choice words (actually more than a few), I headed on down the bank and kept casting. Less than 10 minutes later, I hooked another monster and this time, I got her into the boat. I couldn’t believe it when I put her on the scales and they read 12 pounds 3 ounces. Fish like those are so rare. And not only was it my second largest ever, it was a little over 3 pound bigger than the largest I’ve ever caught on topwater. Better still, I had the whole thing on video.
Little did I know that that fish would start off the best week that I’d ever had on the water. I got to make a pass around the lake every evening when I got home and the big bites continued to roll in. Two nights later, I landed two more monsters, a 9 pound 3 ounce and a 7 pound 13 ounce. Both of these fish also came on the hollow body frog and they were both caught on video.
As the saying goes, all good things must end and when Friday’s rain brought a little drop in temp and some wind, so I figured that would be that. And to an extent, it was. The frog bite turned off, so I picked up a swimbait and tried that and it was on once again. I caught a couple of 6 evens and a bunch of smaller fish and then Sunday, I hooked an 8 pound 5 ounce bruiser to top off a great week.
With that fish, my best 5 for the week ended up weighting 43 pounds 7 ounces (12-3, 9-3, 8-5, 7-13 and 6-0), by far the best five fish I’ve caught in a week, month or even a year before. And better still, I’m sure that I’m not done yet. But you know what, if I don’t catch another big fish all year, that’ll be ok too. After a week like that, who could complain. I certainly won’t, but that won’t stop me from trying to top it.
