You know what they say about the best laid plans. The day was perfect for topwater, with overcast skies, light rain and dead calm, but for some reason I couldn’t get the bass to eat the hollow belly frog I had tied on that morning. I did manage to get a few quick bites on a wacky worm and that got me to thinking about other topwater options. The bass had made it clear that they didn’t want a fast moving or walking bait, so that eliminated the obvious choices of buzzbait or Zara Spook. With those eliminated, a popper style bait seemed to be the obvious choice.
Poppers are a great way to catch bass. They can be fished fast or slow and the sound they make can be varied by how you work it or which brand of popper you choose. One of my favorite brand’s of this type of bait is the Don Iovino Splash-it. The Spash-it’s design makes it’s sound different from all of the others on the market. It’s available in two sizes and comes with the sharpest factory hooks I’ve seen on any hard bait out there. The Splash-it has become one of my go-to baits and from this video you can see why. Check it out and let me know what you think!
