Another year is in the books and I guess that makes it time to reflect on last year and make some of those pesky resolutions for next year. Unlike those from 2011, mostly about eating less and exercising more; I thought that for this year, just to be different, I’d make some that I really expect to keep.
Let’s start with the easy one first. For 2012, I plan to enjoy fishing more. I know. That sounds a little strange, but fishing last year was more stressful than most years for a number of reasons. Last year was all about starting the new website (www.mybasslife.com), getting more exposure and working for the sponsors. That’ll all still go on this year, but I want to spend more time remembering why I do this in the first place. There’s nothing quite like the challenge of figuring out how to catch them and putting a limit in the boat under the constraints of a tournament. Add to that, the pure joy of outsmarting and catching a bass and the rest of the stuff is just background noise.
Next, I want to try and fish more to my strengths. I know that sounds like it should be easy, but it’s even easier to get caught up in what’s going on around you at a tournament and trying to do what other people tell you that you should be doing. So this year, I’m going to try to get back to the things I’ve done in the past that have worked before.
I also want to work on my weaknesses, particularly offshore fishing. I’ve always been a shallow water, pound the banks kind of fisherman, so it’s time to figure out how to catch them out deep. I’m going to carve out some time this summer and hit one of the really good ledge lakes and spend a few days out deep. It’ll be a great time to play with the new Structure Map feature on my Lowrance HDS units.
Lastly and certainly most importantly, I plan to work on some of those bucket list trips that I’ve put off for so many years. And best of all I resolve to make those trips with my family and friends who’ve made my life so special and magical for all these years.
I wish all of you a safe, happy and prosperous New Year!
Thanks to the sponsors who make this all possible: Scoutlookweather.com, Lowrance Electronics, Phoenix Bass Boats, Costa del Mar Sunglasses, Bass Angler Magazine and Mississippi Van Lines. Without all of you, none of this would be possible.
